The Future of Housing

This is even more work I have done in Tech recently, it all, obviously, being about the future of housing. This is a form of continuation off of my Future of Manufacturing blog post. I hope this shows you some insight into my own thoughts about the future of housing and what it will be like.

The Future Of Manufacturing

This is a slide featuring some of the work we have been doing in Tech. As there was too little time to continue onto Wood Tech. Our teacher tasked us to research about the future of manufacturing, what advancements have we made and what advancements are we making now, whether robots will replace everyone's jobs or not, and what skills we will need to survive in the future.

I wonder...

'For, when the sun is at it’s darkest,
And all that are left are the twinkling fairies in the absent sky,
That is when I will dance across the sky, while it is at it’s blackest;
And when you will dance along the lights with my heart,
I hope that we will dance until our hearts are starless'

I wonder how many poems I can write during this period.

Well, let's run a test. :)

'Leaves forever fall,
though it can not be seen,
leaves forever fall,
we will never see it,
but whenever a leaf may fall,
a tree slowly comes apart'

'Colour grows,
then it wilts and whithers away,
colour grows,
but it will never forever stay,
colour grows,
and then people throw it away,
colour grows,
but then it is wrong and we leave the sky grey'

'The tears we shed litter the ground,
they return home with Mother Earth,
when we shed our tears the Mother has drowned,
but not in the tears we shed, never in the tears the people shed,
only the tears of her eyes that have been wept as ours, but as her own, they are found'

This was entirely just an excuse to write poems. :)

The English Scholarship Pathway First Task: Plant and Flower Symbolism - Hyacinths

Hyacinths

I wonder...

How did Theseus' story begin?

Theseus' story begins with King Aegeus and his wife, Aethra, the parents of Theseus. Aethra became his wife by the means of her father, Pittheus, giving her over to his good friend Aegeus, because him, even having been married twice, had no heirs to the throne. After their secret wedding and having lain with the King, Aethra took a walk in the moonlight, which took her through the shallow waters of the sea to the Sferia island. There she met with the god, Poseidon, where he seduced her and took her on the exact same night that the king had. This was the result of Theseus' divine qualities. Soon after his son's birth, the king left to return to Athens, but not before giving Aethra instructions about 'his' son, the instructions he told her were to take Theseus, once he had reached manhood, and move the boulder the king had put his sandals and sword underneath. These items would prove useful later on to prove the boy's heritage.

Once Theseus had reached the appropriate age his mother took him to the boulder and asked him to move it. Theseus completed this task with ease, lifting the boulder like a pebble, then fetching the sandals and sword of his fathers at his mother's request. His mother then told him that he needed to journey to Athens and meet his father. Aethra and her own father, who had helped raise Theseus, begged for him to travel to Athens through the sea, but Theseus denied them, taking the robber-and-thief infested roads instead, feeling no fear of the thieves and robbers that littered the road like trash.
Soon enough, Theseus encountered the first of his difficulties along his path, he had reached Epidaurus, a place sacred to the god Apollo and his son Asclepius. There he met the son of Hephaestus, Periphetes, known to bash the brains out of travellers with a club. Theseus was able to recognize Periphetes on site, as his grandfather, Pittheus, had described him to Theseus in detail. Periphetes, also known as The Cudgel Man, brandished a thick club, and upon seeing Theseus he told him of how he was going to kill him with the weapon. But, before he could strike Theseus began to complement the club. Periphetes, who often bragged, told the youth of how it was made entirely of brass. Though Theseus was not as dumb as he may have seemed, he countered how it couldn't have been made of entirely brass, proposing that it was actually made out wood, and covered in a sheet of brass instead. To prove him wrong, Periphetes handed the club to Theseus so he could inspect the club himself. As soon as he had the club though, Theseus delivered a strike to Periphetes' head, knocking him onto the ground straight away. Theseus decided to keep the club to use later.
Theseus soon encountered his next challenge, a man named Sciron blocked his path, demanding that to be let through, Theseus must wash his feet, claiming that the domain near the cliff's belonged to him. Curious, Theseus questioned the consequences of not doing as Sciron asked. Sciron soon replied that the consequence would be that he would cut Theseus' head off. Even so, Theseus could sense the man's weakness, and, smartly, agreed to wash the man's feet. As began to wash the man's feet, with the cliff face behind him, he looked into the water below him, seeing a gigantic turtle waiting at the bottom of the cliff face. As soon as he made the conclusion that this was the man who would most likely attempt to kick him down straight into the turtle's mouth, he grabbed onto Sciron and threw him down to the turtle instead.
The next challenge Theseus encountered included pine trees, even more attempted murder and a real murder. The man who caused such a challenge was none other than Siris, the Pine-bender (don't worry I've never heard of him either). As soon as the strange man looked upon Theseus he asked for help with an even stranger task, he asked Theseus to help him hold down a bent pine tree, but as soon as Theseus had a good grip on the pine Siris leapt back. The man expected the pine to catapult Theseus into the air, but he did not expect him to be able to hold such a tree down. Believing the pine must have snapped he walked behind the tree, but then Theseus let go, let the pine hit the man, knocking him out. Theseus then took two more pine tree's tying Siris' arms to one and his legs to the other, just as Siris had done to his own victims, letting him go to finish him off, his upper body being torn from his lower.
At this point, the sun had started to set, and it would soon be nightfall for Theseus. Thankfully, Theseus soon came across a house. Hoping the people inside would be kind enough to let him stay, he approached the home. After knocking on the door the man who answered introduced himself as Procrustes, and told Theseus that he had a magic bed that he could stay in for the night. But Theseus had heard of Procrustes and his 'magic' bed, the bed would fit anyone six feet perfectly, but if you were too short you would be bound to the posts and stretched to size, and if you were too tall you would be cut to size. But Theseus followed Procrustes to the room that held the bed. But as soon as they reached the room Theseus forced his host down onto the bed, cutting off his legs, and, to ease his pain, his head.
Travelling through the night Theseus soon reached the beautiful city of Athens. But, his father had married a sorceress named Medea, who predicted that Theseus would cause a problem between the king's relationship with her and how she wanted her own son, Medus to ascend to the throne. Because of her jealousy, she convinced Aegeus that Theseus had come to kill him, and suggested to invite him to a banquet and poison his wine, Aegus quickly agreed as he didn't recognize Theseus as his own son. Theseus eagerly attended the banquet, but as he went to drink the wine, Aegeus recognised the sword that hung off his belt, ordering for him to stop, finally recognising his own son. While Theseus and Aegeus celebrated at the discovery, Medea escaped, as to not be punished by the king.

Reflecting...

ON BUGSY MALONE!!!!

No, this ain't no emotional stuff because it's getting closer to the end of the year. I'm answering questions about how the production of Bugsy Malone so far.

What have I learnt so far?

From this production, I have learnt about how important it is to have every actor there and available. Often people won't respond to their characters name or just not respond when they are called as a general group, this means that not everyone is one stage, or knows their lines or their cues. This can be very frustrating for those who are more dedicated and into the activity, as they can be blamed for their partners or entire group not being on cue or even on stage. Even so, this has been an important lesson for myself and others, as some did expect this project to be short, sweet and fun, and while it is fun, some people don't understand how fun it can be to pretend to be another person. Because, for some time, you aren't you, you don't have your problems, you have someone else's, the problems of someone who doesn't even exist, the problems of someone who will never be real and actually feel the guilt or anger or sadness from these problems you are pretending to have. With acting, you can pretend to be someone constantly angry or sad, and through this, you can take out the anger or sadness that you have and take it out how they would.

How have I been challenged?

I don't think I have been too challenged with my role as Knuckles, in a way it is very much similar to my role as Ed, the character I played in the play last year, basically, say what you have and nothing more. I think what I have been challenged with is the dancing and trying to bond with these people I don't know, I have never been that great of a dancer and I can be very awkward at times with strangers or people I haven't talked to in a long time.

What have been some of my favourites moments so far?

Some of my favourite moments have been watching Nadia getting really mad as Fat Sam and watching others being terrified of her and her yelling, that's kind of mean, isn't it? But, it isn't the only thing I've enjoyed, even though I'm a horrible dancer, I enjoy our short dances at the beginning of lessons, they're fast-paced, keep me moving, and even though it is very cramped, I enjoy the dancing component, but if you ever find a video of me dancing either crop me out or delete the video, I will most definitely look stupid. Even still I am going to put videos of me dancing on here and I know I will severely regret this later in life.

What am I looking forward to?

I am looking forward to doing both of the shows twice in a row. This sounds crazy, doesn't it? Well, I want to know what's like to have that sort of pressure to have two shows in a row, it will be a form of a taster for what a real full-length musical would be like, except very diluted, seeing as the shows are each forty minutes long.

How do all of these blog posts show my working?

They show that I have taken time to study what it would have been really like to be a gang member in the 1920s, how it would have been to really have been Knuckles all that time ago. What I would have seen on my way to Becker's Book Emporium, what I would have worn while passing everyone else on the streets, what kind of words I would have heard people using. Because of the blog's I have done I understand all of this and it's importance.

What am I wondering?

Should Knuckles death have more of a comedic aspect to improve upon the humour like in the video? Or should it still be an emotional, heartbreaking moment for Sam Stacetto, a mobster, who's never known more than nothing and his gang? (I could smell the cheese from a mile away)

Does anyone have a fedora I could use?

How many people can Nadia terrify before this is over?

Don't actually answer that last one, she'll hit me and then she'll find you, if you're a student, and likely hit you as well. Love you Nadia :)

You complete and utter noodle!!!

Image result for head model pngYou heard me right! You're a complete and utter noodle!!! This time we're looking at the 1920's slang and noodle is slang for 'head', so I was practically saying 'You complete and utter head!!!'.

Burning Wings - My Year 9 Creative Writing Award Entry

The burning wings of the Phoenixes that Tawera could see flying above them streaked across the deep
and inky, black, blanket that covered the land, and the feathers they left behind in their flight forever
twinkled in the darkness as stars, they followed in the path of The Great White Phoenix, who circled
the land and oceans showing itself to those in need of its light and guidance. Showing itself to the lost
and guiding them to where they are needed and wanted. The ships lost at sea will be at the docks and
shore by the morning after the great storm, the lost travelers would appear at the doors of their homes
by the afternoon, after the floods and fires that burdened the forests they had walked that morning. It is
said that these miracles happen because the creature that guides the land sees them as valuable, and
worthy of saving from the perils.
Tawera’s thoughts were interrupted, as they often were, by a babies cries. The sound was Tawera’s
younger brother, at nine months, the child didn’t know how to do much else but cry and sleep. Tawera
rocked in her chair next to the crib he laid in, and as she lifted the small baby into her lap the cries turned
softer and softer until there was nothing left to hear but the babies delicate breaths and Tawera’s own.
‘I’m sorry Lucca, Mama isn’t coming home, but don’t worry she left to give you to me and papa. You are
the light of my life and his. You shine brighter than any Phoenix's coat and you will grow knowing that.’
As Tawera looked out the window, there were no tears for her left to cry in her horrible life, but the
Phoenix feathers and the Great White Phoenix still shone against the deep, blue, inky darkness, with
brilliant light, but to Tawera, nothing like these lights could even begin to compare to Lucca’s own.

Tawera could do nothing but hold the crying child, Lucca had reason to cry, it was just him and Tawera
now, against the world, nothing was left except for a lonely house of memories.
‘I’m sorry Lucca, Papa won’t be coming back, but don’t worry he never meant to leave to hurt us, you
know Papa wouldn’t do that. He just went to visit Mama. Just know, you are the light of my life and were
his. You shine brighter than any Phoenix's coat and you will grow knowing that.’
Tawera gripped the seven-year old’s body tighter as he continued to cry, but even his sadness was a
beacon of light to Tawera, his despair showing that even he, could still shine in any dark time. She knew
that somewhere, The Great White Phoenix and their people would shed a tear for him and someday,
guide him home.

Lucca’s tears ran down the gashes, scars, and bruises that coated Tawera’s body, he didn’t even know
he had the tears to cry, he had shed them so often, still, he felt no shame in Tawera seeing him cry, they
had raised them and seen the same tears shed so often. Nothing could make him feel shame about the
tears he cried in front of her.
‘I’m sorry Lucca, I thought he could help us but don’t worry we won’t ever have to see him again, he’ll be
going somewhere where he can get what he deserves. Just know, you are the light of my life and forever
will be. You shine brighter than any Phoenix's coat and you will grow knowing that.’
This didn’t stop Lucca’s tear, though, the tears just came to his eyes quicker, no other thirteen-old boys
cried as often as he did. His sister said those types of words so often they just made him cry and hug Tawera even tighter.

The bulging lump that stuck from Tawera’s stomach had made Lucca cry more than ever, it was a
mixture of joy and despair. Yet, she still cradled it, she held her brother and the lump, Tawera’s feelings
were as mixed as Lucca’s.
‘I’m sorry Lucca, you’ll be meeting someone new soon, but I don’t think I’ll be there to meet them. Just
know, you and this new someone, are the lights of my life and forever have and will be. You both will
shine brighter than any Phoenix's coat and you know that.’
A single tear fell onto Lucca’s shoulder as he hugged his sister, yet his own tears were like waterfall’s
from his eyes, cascading onto her.

The baby cried and cried, asking for their mother. Tawera was there, but she wasn’t. She laid in the bed
just as the woman who had given her life had. Her face was covered in tears, but they weren't even her
own. She hadn’t shed a single tear while laying in that bed, neither upon seeing her brother watch as she
gave her life for another to have one. She hadn’t shed a single tear while laying in that bed, neither upon
saying her final words to the light she had raised from a small boy.
‘I’m sorry Lucca, I’m sorry Lucca, but this child will need you more than anyone. I want you to give them
a name, give them a purpose, give them something to live for, I want you to give them burning wings so
they can fly among the Phoenixes, but most of all, I want you to give them you. I also want you to hear
me tell you this one last time, you have been the light of my life and forever will be, while I fly among the
Phoenixes, you will shine brighter than any Phoenix's coat and you will know this, and you will tell this
child the same. They are the light of your life, they always will be the light of your life, and that they are
your life. I’m sorry Lucca, but I have to say goodbye, I see Mama and Papa up ahead. They say they
love you, they say that you were the light of their lives. May The Great White Phoenix guide you home,
Lucca.’

The tears didn’t stop for days, they wouldn’t, and they didn’t, not until Lucca heard a baby’s cries. He sat in
the same chair that she had years ago, and he pulled the child into his lap, just as his carer had done
herself, he gently rocked with the chair as the babies cry softened and the room turned to silence, Lucca’s
ears hearing nothing but the breathing of his niece and his own breath.
‘I’m sorry Taffia, but your Mama isn’t coming home, but don’t worry she left to give you to me and give you
the chance to live. You are the light of my life. You shine brighter than any Phoenix's feather and you will
grow knowing that.’

He realized his words were the truth, Taffia was the light of his life and would be as long as the Phoenix
feathers shone in the sky. The Great White Phoenix had come to him with great, burning wings and had
guided him home, and for once, it seemed as if he had no tears left to cry.

I wonder...

What are the stories of Artemis and Apollo?

Artemis and Apollo are two of the most famous Greek gods and goddesses from Greek mythology. They are known as the twin archers as they both have a bow as their weapon of choice. Apollo is the god of music, archery, medicine and the sun (mainly), while Artemis rules over archery (as well), hunting, forests and hills, childbirth and the moon. The pair were children over the god Zeus and the Titan Leto and when Hera found out about Leto's children's father being Zeus, she flew into a rage and cursed Leto so that she may not give birth on any land, cursing her to forever be pregnant. Leto searched and searched, prayed to every god, but still, she could never give birth. Eventually, she found the island of Delos, a floating island in the sea, not rooted to the ground, therefore Hera had not cursed her to not give birth on this land. She gave birth to her twins Artemis and Apollo on Delos and it became the twin's sacred land. It is said that Artemis was born ten days before her brother, growing in age all most instantly after birth and serving as her mother's midwife, this is the story that entitled her to the title of goddess of childbirth. Soon enough, Apollo was born and also aged to the same physical form as his sister.
Artemis and Apollo have always been close, to each other and their mother, but they also are willing to defend their mother's honour, and here is how they did so. Niobe was the daughter of Tantalus, a king, and when she grew of age she married King Amphion, the king of Thebes. This led to many tragic events in her life, but soon she and her husband had fourteen children together, seven boys and seven girls. At a later point, she attended a festival that was in honour of Leto, the mother of the divine twins, Artemis and Apollo, in a fit of envy she began to brag about her children, soon addressing herself as better than the mother of the divine twins, as she had raised fourteen children while Leto had only two. When the divine twins heard of this insult they made their descent and confronted Niobe, the seven boys of Niobe were murdered by Apollo and the seven girls of Niobe murdered by Artemis. The dead bodies of Niobe's daughters laid unburied for nine days. There are two different spectacles of how Amphion's life was ended, some say he was so devastated and depressed he committed suicide, others say that he was also murdered by Apollo's arrows, with his seven sons. So saddened by her families death, Niobe ran to the top of Mount Sipylus, weeping and praying for the gods to end her anguish, Zeus felt pity, turning her body to rock and therefore, her feelings. But even in this form, she continued to cry and weep for her family. Her tears pouring from the rock like a stream, to forever remind people of her mistakes and regrets.

Safety Gear

Bib Overalls
Complete Overalls
Overalls

There are two types of overalls used in a workshop, the bib type and the complete overalls. The difference between these two pairs of overalls is simply that the bib type covers every part of your body except your shoulders and arms, while the complete overalls cover every part of your body, except your neck and head of course. The complete overalls are ideal for dirtier jobs.

Welding Gloves

It is difficult to find the perfect pair of welding gloves, they are ideal for handling hot materials, but the thicker and more heat resistant, the clumsier and more difficult to work with they are.

Ear Protection

There are multiple forms of ear protection that you can use when you work in a loud, noisy, workplace. There are neckband earmuffs, which instead of going over the top of the person's head, like most ear muffs, they curl around the back of your neck. This pair of earmuffs are practical for workplaces and allow for a worker to easily and comfortably wear safety glasses and hard hats in a busy workplace when they can't find suiting banded earmuffs.

The banded earmuff is the more popular and common of all of them in the workplace. It allows for a worker to easily wear a hard hat and safety glasses as well. It is the best at removing higher and lower frequency sounds.

The earplug

The earplug is cheaper, easier to manage, but offers less protection from louder and higher frequency noises. These are better for shorter periods of working.

Eye Protection

Prosafe Economy Spec ClearSafety glasses

Safety glasses are best for less dangerous work, not for activities like welding and other things alike. These are not the best due to debris being able to get through the sides, where protection is not given.

Bollé Pilot 2 ClearSafety goggles

The safety goggles are a lot more practical and safe. They provide a lot more protection and are a lot more comfortable than safety glasses. Although, for a non-disposable, a longer-lasting pair of safety goggles you will need to pay a bit more as they are more expensive.

Bionic Faceshield Helmet AdaptorFace shield

These are best for activities that go for a longer duration, like grinding, buffers and other activities alike because they are able to protect the entire face.

Head protection
Tuff Nut Hard Hat
Hard hat

Used commonly in construction sites, hard hats are often required for such places to help protect one's head from falling objects.

Nuisance Dust Mask, 2100

Respirators

Dust mask

The most common and basic of the different kinds of dust masks will filter the small dust particles, but will not do the best job in doing so. These are good for short-term uses.

3M Half Face Respirator 6000 Series- Small 6100Respirator

These are great for all sorts of situations like painting, welding and working in toxic areas. These last long and filter the toxins in the air really well.

Blundstone 316 Boot

Boots

Steel and scuff toe

Best for working in the workshop for a short period of time, the steel and scuff toe for the best form of protection.

Bison XT Extreme Zip-side lace-up Safety Boot

Lace-up

These boots are known to be a good combination between military boots and steel and scuff toe boots, providing the most practical form of protection for feet.

Welding goggles and masks

Uvex Ultrasonic- Type 1 Fire GoggleWelding goggles

The best thing for welding, allowing the wearer to wear other personal protection equipment while welding as well. The best as welding masks can be clumsy and annoying.

Prosafe Welding Helmet- Cover Lends, Clear CR39 Pl

Welding mask

The welding helmet allows for the entire face to protected while welding, although it is not very practical when needing to wear other personal protection equipment.

My Workshop Diary Of Making A Balancing Toy

Since the beginning of term 3, we have been making balancing toys. Now, the period of Metalwork is drawing to a close, even so, many of the students in our class have not succeeded in completing the toy. As you can see, I have not either. Even though we had an extended amount of time, being an extra few hours per week, only around four or five of us finished, no one finishing in time for the original deadline. All that I would have had left to do was finish cleaning my work, weld the last parts, bend the wire into the correct shape and then weld that, then I would have had to clean it again and then spray painted.

Did I finish? If not, why not?

I was not able to finish my project. I believe this is due to the number of days off, short days and the week I had sick. During these days off and short days, however, I was not able to continue with working on the balancing toy.

What did I enjoy?

I enjoyed the subject but often found it pressuring and a little bit stressful, still the subject was fun and I learnt quite a bit about how much work actually goes into making these types of toys and projects. I also enjoyed working in a proper workshop like this one because the one we used during year seven and eight didn't have all the different types of machines and equipment that the school's workshop has.

What did I learn?

I learnt many things including how to change the drill bit on a drill using a chuck key, how welding works, the dangers of working in a metal workshop, the importance of warning signs and other signs alike, there are also many other things I learnt.

What was a challenge?

It was a challenge trying to learn where everything was and how to use it, also remembering the exact names of certain machines and how to work with them.

How did I overcome that challenge?

I overcame that challenge by asking others and asking them questions about how to work each of the machines.

Did I weld?

Yes, I got the opportunity to weld once, but I would have like to have the opportunity again.

What did I think of welding?

It was terrifying holding a torch blowing out the fire and having my hands so close to it. It was still fun using it though, having done it myself with only a small amount of help from my teacher.

What have I got better at?

I think I have gotten better with time management, because of not finishing, this has reminded of how I need to improve upon this. I also think I have gotten better with filing quicker using the draw file.

Crackin' Down On Knuckles!!

Brutus "Knuckles" Adras, the full name I created for the character I am playing in Bugsy Malone, Knuckles. I created this name because, in both the film and Broadway show, their real name is never shown or told, they are referred to only as Knuckles. As I have previously mentioned in my last blog post, Knuckles is named so because of their habit of cracking their knuckles so often.

Here is their character profile!!

Name: Brutus "Knuckles" Adras, the names Brutus and Adras each have different meanings, Brutus meaning 'stupid', I chose the meaning for obvious reasons, Knuckles being one of Fat Sam's dumb gang members. Adras means 'horseman', I was originally looking for a name that plainly meant man, so that the two names would come together to mean 'stupid man', but for some reason, 'stupid horseman' sounds a bit funnier, more original and unique, doesn't it?

Age: In the film and Broadway shows Knuckles is played by a tween, which is one of the things that makes 'Bugsy Malone' so different, the entire cast are children and tweens. Even so, if this had been a production with older, more suitable, cast, I believe that Knuckles would have been portrayed as someone either in their late teens or early twenties.

Most Common Emotion: Fear, I believe that Knuckles would be in either constant fear of the gang leader, Fat Sam, or in admiration.

Physical Characteristics: The cracking of the Knuckles, as discussed.

Fears: Fat Sam, can you blame him? The guys always yelling about how stupid they are and often threatening to kill them. Even still, Knuckles could never leave him, Fat Sam would hunt him down.

Strengths: Knuckles strength is his strength, it is often mentioned how dumb the gang members are and Fat Sam even says 'You've got muscle where you ought to have brains,'. It is stated quite a bit how Fat Sam's gang member s are slow and dumb, having no other better characteristics.

Early Life: Brutus grew up as a down and out until he walked into Becker's Book Emporium while trying to get away with stealing some food from a shopkeeper. He was allowed in and Fat Sam offered him a job for some good cash. Since learning that Fat Sam was also a down and out when he was young, Knuckles has been in constant admiration of the gang leader who built an entire empire out of nothing.

Makeup Ideas: With Knuckles, I think it would be best that, if there was any makeup, it could be depictions of scarred skin and dirt covering their face.

Costume Ideas: A suit of some kind would be best for a character like Knuckles, but seeing as I don't have something like that. I imagine it would be something along the lines of a plain white shirt, dress black jacket, and black jeans or tights.
